Talakto District 2006 Top Eagle Project for 2006
Chase Ludwig of Troop 343
The National Eagle Scout Association and the Greater Alabama
Council of the Boy Scouts of America is pleased to announce the Top Eagle
Scout Project of 2006 for the Talakto District of Madison County. Saturday
night during the annual spring camporee at Sharon Johnston Park, Eagle Scout
Chase Ludwig of Troop 343 was presented with the honor of being selected
as the Top Eagle Scout Project of 2006. Chase is the son of Scott and Kathy
Ludwig of Hampton Cove. Chase's brother, Hayes, is following in Chase's footsteps.
Chase is currently a junior at Randolph High School and is active in cross
country, the Student Government Association, and the Youth Leadership Council.
Last year, Chase attended a one month program at Oxford University in Oxford,
England studying Politics, Economics, War, and World History. When he returns
to school in the fall, he will serving Randolph High School as the Vice-President
of the Student Government Association and the Head of the Student Ambassadors.
Chase has ranked in the top 10 in the State of Alabama on the Latin Exam and
the Fench Exam.
Chase has been active in his troop for several years and has served in various
leadership responsibilities including Librarian, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol
Leader, and Troop Guide. He is currently the troop's representative for the
Order of the Arrow. He has also hiked part of the Appalachian Trail, been to
Philmont Scout Ranch, rafted part of the Arkansas River, and cycled the Nachez
Trace. Chase is also a Life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
Chase's Eagle Project commenced in November of 2005 from an interest in reading.
He wanted others in his community to able to read all the various kinds of
books also, but knew there were many who could not afford to buy books on there
own. He identified a care center in Berkely to put all of the books that he
collected. He built several bookcases in a supply closet used for storage.
Chase then mapped out the city in sections and sent letters to churches, libraries,
schools, and supermarkets detailing the project and asking for donated books
or money to buy books. He then got with his troop and cub scout pack and put
together 1500 flyers and bags. He sent everyone to different parts of the city
to distribute the flyers. He planned to receive about 1500 books, but gathered
more than 10,000 books instead. Knowing he more books, he went back to the
care center and built more shelve to hold the extra books. After that, he organ
ized the books into adult, teen, or children's books and priced them from 25
cents to 1 dollar to allow the community to maintain its sense of dignity and
pride and avoid hand-outs. The total project ended in March of 2006 and took
more than 585 man hours to complete. Chase pledged to return during the following
year to update, reorganize and maintain the closet for the community.
For being selected as the Top Eagle Scout Project of 2006, the Talakto Chairman
of the National Eagle Scout Association, Kevin Kitchens, presented Chase with
a plaque from the Greater Alabama Council as well as a plaque that hangs in
the Scout Shop on Drake Avanue. The National Eagle Scout Association also donated
a $100 gift card to the Huntsville Scout Shop. To honor and congratulate Chase
in his accomplishments, Regions Bank donated a $100 United States Savings Bond
and a Savings account with a $25 starter balance.
